A family guide to Wern Holiday Cottages
Welcome to your go-to family guide for staying at Wern Holiday Cottages, nestled on the stunning Llyn Peninsula in North Wales. Whether your group has toddlers, energetic teens, grandparents or a four-legged friend - we’ve got inspiration for beaches, eating out, gentle adventures and cosy chill-out time.
Beach & Coastal Adventures
Black Rock Sands: Just a 5-minute drive from the cottages, this is a zero-stress beach for families. Wide sand, dunes, rock-pools and plenty of space for kids to run around. The dog-friendly section means your pup isn’t left out either.
Criccieth Beach: Also about 5 minutes away, this promenade beach is pebbly and perfect for collecting shells, watching the waves and stopping for an ice-cream.
Borth Y Gest: Around 10 minutes’ drive, a quieter spot where you can explore the coast and stroll with less hustle. A little more off-beat and great for a late-afternoon wander.
If you’ve got time, drive about 25 minutes to Porthdinllaen & Nefyn Bay, famous for its wall-side pub and sweeping sea view - a treat for the adults.
Eat & Drink
When you’re staying in, our self-catered cottages have everything you need. But sometimes you’ll want to head out for a treat. Here are some favourites:
Dylan’s Criccieth – On the coastline of the Llyn Peninsula and perfect for families looking for something a little special but still relaxed.
Y Sgwar – In the picturesque market square of Tremadog, with mountain views and a setting good for a slower lunch or a quieter evening.
Y Maes Court – More than a restaurant: a revived historic space brimming with character, for when you want a grown-up meal and the kids are entertained.
For sweet treats or lighter bites: Cariad Gelato in Criccieth is legendary for its ice-cream, and Cadwalader’s is a classic for cake and gluten-free options.
Explore the Great Outdoors
North Wales is an outdoor playground, and from Wern Holiday Cottages you have easy access to adventures for all ages — from gentle strolls to splashing about on the water.
Snowdonia / Eryri: Towering peaks, breathtaking views and quiet family-friendly valley walks.
Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways: Perfect for kids (and grown-ups who love a steam engine!) with scenic routes through mountains and coastline.
Portmeirion Village: Colourful architecture, woodland walks and sandy shoreline — ideal for a half-day of exploring.
Watersports for Families
Just 10 minutes from Wern, the coastline is a brilliant place to try beginner-friendly watersports:
Canoeing: Calm bays such as Borth-y-Gest and Black Rock Sands are great for paddling as a family. Local hire companies offer stable canoes suitable for children and first-timers.
Paddle Boarding: On warm days the shallows at Criccieth or Pwllheli Marina are ideal for stand-up paddle-boarding. Hire equipment locally or bring your own - it’s an easy, confidence-building activity for teens and adults.
Kayak Tours: Guided coastal tours are available nearby for anyone wanting a bit more adventure while still being safe and family-friendly.
Mini Golf & Family Games
For a lighthearted afternoon or a break from the beach:
Criccieth Mini Golf: A fun, traditional mini-golf course right by the promenade — perfect for an hour of friendly competition followed by ice-cream.
