If you’re arriving after dark, the pathway lights will switch on automatically as you approach. We recommend bringing a torch or using your phone flashlight to help guide your way, as the path can be uneven in places.
Take a moment to enjoy the setting, the peaceful surroundings and open views make this part of the experience as calming as the sauna itself.
Before You Begin
Please remember to bring everything you’ll need for your session:
- Swimwear (without metal fastenings)
- A towel, to sit on and dry off afterwards
- A bottle of water to stay hydrated
- Footwear suitable for the grassy walk up the hill
There are no lockers, but a small covered porch area beside the sauna provides space to leave your towel, robe, and belongings safely while you relax.
Inside the Sauna
The Wern sauna has one seating tier and comfortably fits up to six people. It’s beautifully simple - warm wood, a soft glow, and the gentle heat filling the space.
The sauna will be hot and ready for you when you arrive.
Please take care near the stove area, as it becomes very hot during use. All heating is controlled automatically, so you can simply settle in, breathe deeply, and let the warmth work its magic.
Applying a small amount
Choose your spot, place your towel on the bench, and ease yourself into the heat. As your body warms, your muscles will begin to relax and your breathing will slow.

Adding Water to the Sauna Heater
You’re welcome to add a little water to the hot stones to create gentle steam and enhance the warmth of the sauna. This process, known as löyly, softens the air and deepens the heat - a wonderful part of the sauna experience.
How to do it safely:
- Use the wooden ladle and bucket provided.
- Pour a small ladle of water (about half a cup) slowly over the centre of the stones.
- Step back slightly - the steam will rise quickly and fill the air with soothing heat.
- Wait a minute or two before adding more if you’d like extra steam.
- Only use clean water from the tap provided - please don’t add oils or fragrances, as they can damage the heater.
- Never rest the ladle on the stove - it becomes extremely hot.
Take your time and enjoy the rhythm of the heat and steam - it’s one of the simplest pleasures of the sauna.
The Sauna Cycle
A traditional sauna experience alternates between warming up, cooling down, and resting. You’re encouraged to move at your own pace - there’s no right or wrong way to enjoy it.
- For beginners, start with 3–5 minutes in the heat.
- For those more accustomed to sauna bathing, up to 15 minutes per round is ideal.
Once you’re ready to cool down, step outside into the fresh air and feel the contrast between the warm glow of your skin and the cool breeze. You can rinse off under the cold-water shower or, if you’re feeling brave, try the outdoor bucket rinse - a refreshing shock that leaves you feeling energised and alive.
There’s no plunge pool or sea access at Wern, so your cool-down options are simple and close by.
After cooling down, return to the sauna for another round of heat, or take a few moments to rest quietly outdoors, listening to the sounds of nature around you. Repeat this cycle as many times as time allows within your session, each round will leave you feeling more relaxed and refreshed.
Important Tips
- Everyone’s comfort level is different so listen to your body and do what feels right for you.
- If you have any health conditions or are new to sauna use, consider checking with a medical professional before your visit.
- Take your time when using the cold-water shower or bucket rinse, ease in slowly and allow your body to adjust before the full splash.
